Love Affair with Radio

(Hey!! Radio is not the name of my Girl Friend or someone special; it’s the RADIO the best means of communication.)

I love my childhood days as everyone does. The memory of those naughty friends; now turned into good ones, those fearful teachers; now great ones, those moments when I spent my precious childhood playing marbles and football, being the best goal keeper of the football tournament at the village ; getting words of praises from the friends, but being terribly scolded by mother on each evening after returning home. Now I feel that those sweet and sour experiences constitute the LIFE.

With all those simple but great experiences of my childhood and teenage days, I think, I am enriched. There are many good friends, some of them are married by now, and some have become professional in their own fields. I still remember most of them. However, In particular, I remember RADIO as one of my best friends. The fact is that we are still in a good relation and I hope the relation will never be exhaustible.

I remember those teenage days. My friends used to write love letters, exchange with each other. The young people used to read the romantic novels, used to talk secretly about sex, about TV Serials, about the Bollywood hero/heroines (Sharukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Sharukh is still doing his magic in Bollywood, now Madhuri's fame has shadowed by Bipasa Basu and … Ohh sorry I don’t know many names of Bollywood actress.) When my teenage friends used to remain busy in these stuffs, I used to pass my time listening to RADIO.
Our family owned a large Japanese radio set- it is still there but no more in use- on which my father used to tune into BBC Nepali service which in turn became my habit.

Knowingly or unknowingly, from my childhood, I had crushed with Radio. During my childhood, the means of entertainment were limited. Despite the fact that the television was one of the mostly used means of entertainment for most of the youth, I enjoyed listening to Radio. However, in these days, a child grows in a television culture with the TV remote at its hands. I still remember when I first touched computer and felt myself as a lucky guy. After completing S.L.C., when I was a trainee for computer courses, I felt very excited and felt proud of it. Last week, I was surprised to be asked for my email address from a sixth grade student. Isn't it a radical change in Informational technology!

I again want to recall those days. More specifically, the broadcasting of FM Station that brought many changes in Radio, attracted many young people. Later on, that large Japanese Radio set was replaced by a small FM radio set. One day, I broke our small FM radio set (naughty me!), I cried with fear that my father would scold me. Surprisingly, without scolding and doing anything, he promised me to bring a new one. (But, I bought the radio with my own money.)

I collected all the money that I got from elders on Dashain festival. It summed around Rs. 200, and I gave the sum to my father and requested him to bring a new radio set for me. The next day, I was again happy and excited to get a new radio (a fabulous thing!). Since that day the small radio became my best friend remaining closest to me throughout the day and night. It always accompanied me from early morning to late night on my bed side.

I still remember that day when my name was announced in radio for the first time. With a great excitement and enthusiasm, on that particular day, I couldn't sleep the whole night.
Among the radio programs, I preferred the informative programs to the entertaining ones the best. During those days, I used to regularly listen to the programs on Radio Sagarmatha, the first community Radio of South Asia. I was a regular listener to BBC Nepali Sewa that was broadcast from 8.45 to 9:15 PM.

That was the beginning of my affair with RADIO, (I USED TO DREAM: HOW IT COULD BE IF I GOT CHANCE TO SPEAK ON RADIO, radio ma bolna paye kasto hunthyo hola ahahahha). When I was in grade 10, without getting any technical knowledge, skills and training for radio production I could design a concept of a Radio Program (I was just 15 and the concept was appreciated by the management team of Radio Sagarmatha.)

This is the end of first part of my love story with Radio. After four years, I again joined radio and began the journey, though this was a large gap in between me and Radio. (I produced a program named YUVA AANKHA in collaboration with other friends of Creative Youth Society. The program was broadcast through communication corner). And now I am in RADIO (I take it as a challenge and opportunity, to raise the voice of voiceless people and to help creating positive change.) with a motive to bring about social change.

Change is only the constant thing in the world. Many things get changed with time. I am grown up with time. In these days, to listen radio programs, people are using mobile devices with an attached radio instead of that large Japanese radio set. The advancement of technology has brought many changes in people's life. But still my attitude and attraction towards Radio is becoming more powerful day by day.

What is Radio for me?
Radio is a passion for me; it is not only the means of communication, but I believe radio can bring positive changes in our society. While other media are expensive and are not accessible to all people for our country like Nepal, Radio is the easiest, cheapest, and best medium to disseminate information and bring a common understanding among all the people.
Among all the means of communication, Radio is very powerful because it reaches to a huge audience quickly and furthermore, it allows them to interact with one another more easily.
The scope of radio is getting broader and broader in terms of its increasing importance and utility. I would like to thank all those VOICES that brought me closer to Radio. This proves the fact that Radio is not only a means of entertainment but a catalyst for a positive social transformation.
This is my love story with Radio. I still love it passionately. It is my first friend that informed me the world is not small.
My dear radio, I will be there for you forever.
